Evaluation of basic life support knowledge and associated factors among employees of the Kırıkkale Provincial Health Directorate
Aims: This study was conducted to determine the level of knowledge regarding Basic Life Support (BLS) among employees of the Kırıkkale Provincial Health Directorate and to evaluate the sociodemographic and professional factors affecting this level.
Methods: This descriptive study was carried out with 180 healthcare personnel working at the Kırıkkale Provincial Health Directorate. Data were collected through a questionnaire prepared by the researchers. The questionnaire consisted of items related to sociodemographic characteristics, BLS training and experience, and a 12-item knowledge test. Statistical analyses included the chi-square test, independent samples t-test, and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), with a significance level set at p<0.05.
Results: The mean BLS knowledge score of the participants was 7.12 ± 2.98. It was determined that 33.3% of the participants had low, 30.6% had moderate, and 36.1% had high levels of knowledge. Knowledge scores were significantly higher among females and university graduates (p<0.001). Statistically significant associations were found between knowledge level and receiving BLS training, performing practice on mannequins, prior experience in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and self-perceived competence (p<0.001). Additionally, BLS training and prior CPR experience were found to positively influence self-perceived competence.
Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that BLS training and hands-on experience have significant effects on both knowledge level and self-perceived competence among healthcare workers. Accordingly, it is recommended that regular, practice-based, and guideline-updated BLS training programs be expanded for healthcare personnel.
